Anti-Reflective coatings, also called non-glare coatings, are something we offer on any clear lenses at our store. It is something that not only improves your vision through your glasses, it also can reduce your eye strain. The Anti-Reflective (AR) coating functions by eliminating glare coming off of the front and backside of your lens. Without these reflections, more light passes through your lenses. This means you see better!
AR coating is especially important for people who have strong prescriptions and need high index lenses. The high-index lenses are denser to make the lens thinner and this means they reflect even more light than a regular plastic lens. The AR coating helps negate that reflection and gives nearly any prescription very high clarity of vision. The AR coating is especially beneficial in low light situations, like driving at night, because more light can pass through the lens. It also helps reduce and nearly eliminate halos and starbursts that can surround street lights, headlights and stoplights. The AR coatings that we use eliminate nearly all the glare you get and can allow up to 99.5 percent of light to pass through the lenses.
The AR coating also has a cosmetic function as well. It can make glasses appear like they don't have any lenses in them. It allows people to see your eyes clearly as they talk to you. It also helps eliminate reflections that can happen on your glasses when you are being photographed. Plus having lenses with the AR coating just look better!
Typically, most people use an AR coating on clear lenses, but if you are someone that is very sensitive to glare, an AR can be put on your sunglasses too. The AR on sunglasses is only put on the backside of the lenses since most of the glare in sunglasses comes from the back surface of the lens.
